The
practice of pain management is a new and exciting field
of medicine. Throughout much of history, the medical professions
viewed pain as a symptom, and focused on finding and treating
the underlying cause. Unfortunately, this approach was not
always successful, and many patients continued to endure
chronic pain with little hope of relief. In recent years,
medical science began to realize that relief of pain should
be a priority, and the last twenty years saw the development
of pain management as a medical specialty. Physicians who
specialize in pain management are trained to evaluate and
alleviate both acute and chronic pain resulting from a variety
of causes.
At The Pain Institute, the staff begins by obtaining a medical
history and any necessary information from the patient's
primary doctor or other specialists. After a thorough physical
examination and diagnostic testing, the physicians of The
Pain Institute develop an individualized treatment program
for each patient. For greatest effectiveness, the team takes
a multi-disciplinary approach, which may include medication,
diagnostic and therapeutic nerve blocks, physical therapy,
occupational therapy, bio-feedback and stress management.
Our goal for every patient is to achieve the maximum pain
relief possible.
