Most
types of acute and chronic pain can be managed and controlled,
allowing patients to return to a normal life. The Joint Commission
on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations ( JCAHO )
recently established pain as the "fifth vital sign," to
be evaluated along with temperature, pulse, respiration and
blood pressure. This was part of an effort to address each
patient's right to appropriate assessment and management
of pain.
The Pain Institute has recognized this need for many years. Since 1991,
